Here again, John says to love one another.  He’s saying that this is not anything new.  This is that ‘which we heard from the beginning.’  As time goes on and we get busy with our everyday lives, even busy doing the work of the ministry, we have to be careful not to forget the commandment of love.

The reason Jesus came and went through what He did for us was because of God’s great love for us.  We respond to that love by receiving it, by becoming born again, new creatures in Christ Jesus.  And now that we are born of God the love of God dwells within us.  It’s important to keep this love as the basis for all we do.  If we don’t we just become religious people going through the motions of religion but without the Spirit of God in what we do.

We need to keep the love of God active in our lives so we can carry out His intents and purposes the way He desires.  By keeping the love of God in what we do, we keep His Spirit in what we do.  And where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty!

Confession:

I will walk in the love of God.  I will not forget that this is His commandment.  Even as time goes on and I become busy with what He sets before me to do I will remember the command of love.  By doing so I will keep His Spirit and His liberty active in my life.
