Instead of Craving to be Rich
1 Timothy 6:9-11

  1. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
  2. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
  3. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

He’s talking about those who want to get rich.  The Amplified Bible says, "those who crave to be rich," fall into many problems.  He says rather than to crave to be rich (which has caused some to wander away from the faith and experience much pain), to follow, righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and meekness.

He says to "flee these things."  What things?  The desire to be rich and the love of money.  By not craving riches you flee from foolish and hurtful lusts that bring ruin and destruction.  You flee all sorts of evil.  You flee being pierced through with many sorrows.  You flee these things by not craving material possessions.

Again, it’s not that God wants us to not have anything.  But He wants our priorities to be right.  Our time, efforts and hearts desire should be to follow after the things he mentions here.  Our desire should be to follow God’s Kingdom rather than the world’s possessions.

Confession:

I will put my priorities in proper order and rather than craving riches I will follow the things of God’s Kingdom.  I’ll not work towards building a kingdom for myself but I will work towards building the Kingdom of God.
