Seasoned with Salt
Colossians 4:5-6

  1. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time.
  2. Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.

We’re told to walk wisely towards those that ‘are without’.  Those that are outside the church—unbelievers.  We’re told to redeem the time or to make the best of every opportunity.  And for our speech to be always with grace, seasoned with salt.

Our speech should be full of grace towards everyone and here he particularly emphasizes towards unbelievers.  God’s grace is extended towards those who don’t believe.  Our speech towards them shouldn’t be judgmental or critical or intolerant but full of His grace, seasoned with salt.

Jesus said we are the salt of the Earth (Matthew 5:13).  Salt must possess ‘saltiness’ if it’s to be of any good.  When it does-it’s good.  It’s flavorful, it’s a preservative.  Our speech should be seasoned with salt.  It should carry the goodness of God, the flavor of God and the preserving life of God.  As our speech is full of God’s grace and the flavor of God the words we speak will always be those that give an answer to those listening.  They will be God’s words, God’s wisdom, God’s love and grace, and God’s answers to those we’re talking to.  We won’t be at a loss for words because we’ll be speaking His Words which will minister life.

Confession:

I will walk wisely towards unbelievers making the most of every opportunity.  My words will be gracious and seasoned with salt.  I’ll not be at a loss how to answer those who ask questions.

Obedience is a tree of life!
