Watch and be Sober
1 Thessalonians 5:6-7

 

  1. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.
  2. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.

 

The world will be caught off guard by the coming of Jesus.  But because we are the children of light and children of the day that day should not catch us off guard (see 1 Thessalonians 5:1-5).  Because that day should not catch us off guard he says to watch and be sober.  Don’t sleep or in other words stay alert and awake to the things of the Spirit of God so that you are prepared.

This would imply that if we’re not watchful we could be caught off guard.  The parable Jesus told of the 10 virgins shows that 5 were prepared and 5 weren’t The 5 that weren’t were not prepared when the groom came and missed out. (Matthew 25:1-13).


It’s dangerous to think that because He hasn’t come yet it’s still going to be a long time.  That type of thinking may cause a person to be caught unprepared.

 

Confession:

I am a child of the day and of the light so I will remain spiritually awake and alert until the coming of the Lord.  I will not fall asleep spiritually but I will be prepared for His coming.

 

Obedience is a tree of life!
