31: But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way. The 12th chapter of 1 Corinthians talks about spiritual gifts. There are different gifts given to the church by the Holy Spirit, (verses 4-6). He lists the various manifestations of these gifts of the Holy Spirit in verses 7-10. Then he goes on to talk about the body of Christ and how each one has their place. The gifts given to you will enable you to function in your place within the body of Christ. No one is any more or less important than anyone else for everyone has their function given by the Lord. He also talks of gifts given to the church as a whole in verse 28 and implies that not everyone has all these gifts. Some are apostles, some are prophets etc... Not all. Finally he says here in this verse to covet earnestly the best gifts. The Amplified Bible says to "earnestly desire and zealously cultivate the greatest and best-the higher gifts and the choicest graces." We read from chapter 12 that God is the One who gives the gifts as it pleases Him, yet He says to desire the best gifts. So it seems that God would have you to be zealous concerning your function in the body so that you earnestly desire to be used by Him in the best way possible. Not, of course, for your own glory or your own self-seeking motives, but for the good of the Kingdom of God.
Confession: I will do as the Word of God says and covet earnestly the best gifts. I will earnestly desire and zealously cultivate the greatest and best gifts God has for me. I want to use the gifts the Lord has given me.
Obedience is a tree of life!
