Seeking to edify the church
1 Corinthians 14:12

12: Even so ye, forasmuch as ye are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church.

Paul is continuing his discussion about how if a person just publicly speaks out in tongues during a church service and there is no interpretation of the tongue then it is insignificant to others since they don’t understand what is being said.

He compares it to a person playing an unfamiliar tune on a trumpet.  How will those listening know they are supposed to prepare for battle if they don’t recognize the tune?  In the same way, if you are eager to be used in the gifts of the Spirit then you should strive to excel for the purpose of building up the church.  In ways that will be truly helpful to the body and not just a lot of show.

Confession:

I will desire to excel in the gifts of the Spirit for the purpose of edification for the whole church, not to just put on a show and draw attention to myself.

Obedience is a tree of life!
