On the Job
Ephesians 6:5-9

  1. Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
  2. Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
  3. With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
  4. Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.
  5. And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him.

He addresses slaves and masters here and you can apply this to employee / employer relationships.  Verse 5 in the Amplified Bible says:

Servants (slaves), be obedient to those who are your physical masters, having respect for them and eager concern to please them, in singleness of motive and with all your heart, as [service] to Christ [Himself].

I don’t know that this attitude among employees is very common today.  I would dare say most people do not respect their employers in this way.  But as Christians who have bosses over us, this verse applies to us (Of course if a boss tells you to do something that violates the Word of God you don’t do it. - Acts 5:29).  But overall our attitude towards our employer should be respect and eager concern to please them with a pure motive.  Not just to please those who are watching us in the natural but we do it as unto the Lord—to please Him.

As we do our job as unto the Lord it makes it a whole lot easier to have a good attitude.  The Lord Himself is your true Boss and He will reward everyone in the end.

For those who are employers and have those working under them he says to ‘do the same to them’.  Treat them as you would the Lord.  Verse 9 in the Amplified says:

You masters, act on the same [principle] toward them, and give up threatening and using violent and abusive words, know that He Who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no respect of persons—no partiality—with Him.

In God’s eyes, there is no respect of persons.  Just because you are someone’s boss doesn’t give you the right to be disrespectful towards them.  God is still God over both of you.

Confession:

As an employee I will do my job as unto the Lord. I won’t have an attitude or be disrespectful toward my boss(es) or place of employment.  I will be eager to please.

As an employer I will treat my employees with respect.  I will treat them as I would the Lord knowing He is no respector of persons.

Obedience is a tree of life!
