November 29 1 Peter 5:3
He’s continuing his instructions to the Elders (Pastors and Spiritual Leaders) of the church. He says here to take the oversight and feed the flock of God not as lords or arrogant, dictatorial and overbearing persons, but by being examples to the congregation. The Leaders of a church are not to rule by being controlling or manipulative in their dealings with the congregation. They’re not to put people on ‘guilt trips’ or be forceful in their dealings with their people. But instead they are to act as examples of the Christian lifestyle and of Jesus Christ Himself. This is why the Leaders must take their positions willingly and eagerly as he said in verse 2. If an Elder is filling a position that he/she really doesn’t want to or isn’t called to, then he will have difficulties in his relationship with the congregation. He must remember also that even though God has given him oversight over the flock, it is in fact God’s flock.
Confession: I realize the Elders in the church are not to be forceful or controlling in their relationship with the congregation. I will pray for the Leaders of my church. Elders: I will fill my leadership position by being an example of Jesus Christ to the congregation. I will not lead by force, manipulation or guilt but I will represent Christ in all I do.
Obedience is a tree of life!
