September 6 Hebrews 6:1
We’re encouraged here to go on from the basic doctrine of Jesus Christ and to go on to spiritual maturity. He’s not saying we should do away with the basic principals of Christ but that we should build on that foundation and go on. Repentance from dead works and faith towards God are listed as two of the foundational principals of Christ. People may struggle with these two foundational principals for years and never get any further in their spiritual growth. Repentance from dead works should be something we do and then go on from there. We shouldn’t keep looking back to the dead works we used to do, that we’ve overcome, but we should go on and build on the foundation of repentance from dead works. You can look at this in 2 ways. Not just repentance from sin but repentance from "dead works" or our own "religious" efforts to try and become righteous. Once we repent of sin and our own efforts to justify ourselves then we can go on to faith towards God. Faith towards God is listed as a foundational principal here. We need to make up our minds once and for all that God speaks the Truth. That His Word is the ultimate Truth and we will accept it, submit to it and live by it. Of course, our faith will grow as we mature and get to know Him and His Word better but we must move on from the basic foundation of faith and build upon it.
Confession: I will not get stuck in a rut of spiritual immaturity but I will move on in spiritual growth. I will build upon the foundation of repentance from dead works and faith towards God.
Obedience is a tree of life!
