In Spirit and in Truth

December 21, 2001

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.  God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.  John 4:23-24

What does it mean to worship God in spirit and in truth?  If God is seeking those who will worship Him that way then we need to know what that means.

First of all, God is a Spirit and we are a spirit.  So we worship Him (His Spirit), with our spirit.  From spirit to spirit.  Not just out of our emotions, intellect or physical body.  Those things may be involved when we worship God but He is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth.

God is looking for those who are sincere, for those who are worshipping Him from their heart.  Those who are worshipping from their innermost being, their true self and not those who are just emotional or full of physical expressions.  Those things will happen and at times we do get emotional or physically express our worship through dancing or clapping or raising our hands.  God’s Word says to do those things and they are not wrong.  But if we do all that and are not true in our worship from the heart, then it’s not really worship at all.  We won’t be the kind of worshippers God is seeking.

Notice it says God is seeking "worshippers" and not just "worship."  God’s heart is in His people, not in the actions themselves.  True worship comes from the heart, not just outward expressions and those are the kind of worshippers God is looking for.

Secondly, true worship is when we express our worship to God in such a way that we really and truly desire to bring pleasure to Him.  It’s like buying a present for someone and you go the extra mile to find out what they really want instead of just giving them what you would want.  We can worship by the Spirit of God meaning we sense by His Spirit what pleases Him and worship Him that way.

God is looking for those who worship Him in Spirit and in truth.  He’s not looking for the worship, He’s looking for the people.  I don’t know about you but I want to be one of those that God is seeking out.  When He finds you, it will be nothing but good!

God Bless you and have a great day!
