Is God Speaking Today?

May 11, 2004

If we want a fresh, prophetic Word from God in our midst then we must first receive the Word He’s already spoken.  God has always desired to speak with His people and He has always provided a means to do so.  But how He spoke to those under the Old Covenant was different from how He speaks today.

"In many separate revelations [each of which set forth a portion of the Truth] and in different ways God spoke of old to [our] forefathers in and by the prophets.  [But] in the last of these days He has spoken to us in [the person of a] Son…" Hebrews 1:1-2 Amp.

God’s desire is to communicate with us.  His desire is to speak with us today.  It wasn’t enough for Him to speak to our forefathers of the Old Testament.  It wasn’t enough for Him to speak to the apostles, elders and saints of the early church.  Would it be enough for you and your spouse to have spoken only during your time of dating and engagement?  Would it be enough only for you to have spoken in the early days of your marriage?  No.  You need to still communicate and speak today also.

So these verses clarify how God speaks to us today, not if He wants to speak to us today.  The rest of the chapter goes on to establish Jesus Christ, the Word of God, as the expression of the glory of God and how He has been exalted by God Himself.  Then it says at the beginning of the next chapter:

"Since all this is true, we ought to pay much closer attention than ever to the truths that we have heard, lest in any way we drift past [them] and slip away..."

"…For it (His great salvation) was declared at first by the Lord {Himself}, and it was confirmed to us and proved to be real and genuine by those who personally heard [Him speak}.  [Besides this evidence] it was also established and plainly endorsed by God, Who showed His approval of it by signs and wonders and various miraculous manifestations of [his] power and by imparting the gifts of the Holy Spirit [to the believers] according to His own will."  Hebrews 2:1, 3, 4 Amp. (italics mine)

The ‘it’ here is talking about the Word of salvation that has been spoken to us.  First it was given to us by the Lord Jesus Himself, then it was confirmed by witnesses who heard Him, God also showed His approval on the message through signs and wonders and miracles and God also shows His approval or witness to the message through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

So we see that the gifts of the Spirit—the revelation, prophetic words and miracles—that God gives is a witness to the message of salvation that is spoken.  So if we want to see this evidence of the gifts in our midst then we must receive and preach, or speak, the message of salvation as spoken by the Word of our Lord Jesus Christ.  If we neglect and reject this Word then, can we expect God to move in signs and wonders, revelation and insight, or prophetic words of encouragement and exhortation?

We must pay much closer attention than ever to what we have already heard so we do not let these things slip.  And as we do, we will hear from God.  We will hear a fresh word from Him regarding what He desires to speak to us today.  And of course we know that power, deliverance, freedom and life comes from a spoken Word from God.
