What To Do When You Don’t Know What To Do

February 3, 2002

  1. If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
  2. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering.  For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
  3. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
  4. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8

If we lack wisdom the Bible says we can ask God for it and He will give it to us liberally, as long as we ask in faith.  (So this means it is possible to ask without faith and not receive anything from the Lord).  When we don’t know what to do we can pray for wisdom and receive it.

But oftentimes the answers to our problems or the wisdom that we need is right in the Bible.  God will often answer our prayers for wisdom by leading us to scriptures and bringing to light how they apply to our current situation.

When we pray and ask God for wisdom it would do us well to roll up our sleeves and dig into the Word and trust God to bring the answers to us as we read and study.  This is one way we can show our faith by our works as it says in James 2:18.

If we really believe God will bring the wisdom we need we can put ourselves into a position to receive that wisdom by doing what we know to do and going where we know to go to find the answers—the Bible.  We shouldn’t get to a point where we expect God to speak to us in prayer alone and neglect the study of His Word.

God has given us so much already! It’s laid out on the table for us to come and eat and partake of.  But we need to make the effort to come to the table and pick up a fork and knife if we are to receive all the wisdom and knowledge He has made available for us.

God Bless you and have a great day!
