The Milk of the Word

June 11, 2000

1 Peter 2:2 says "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby."

I think we overlook that verse sometimes because we think he’s talking to baby Christians so it doesn’t apply to us.  But there’s a truth here that all of us need to see.

The truth is that the sincere milk of the Word of God causes spiritual growth in our life.  In everyone’s life.  Whether you are a brand new Christian or you’ve been a Christian for 60 years, the truth is that the sincere milk of the Word causes spiritual growth.

I would go so far as to say that only the sincere milk of the Word causes spiritual growth.  We may have experiences with the Lord, but if we want growth in the Lord we need His sincere Word.

The word ‘sincere’ there in the Greek means undeceitful and unadulterated.  The Amplified Bible says the, "pure, unadulterated spiritual milk".  We need to receive the pure Word of God.  The Word that is not watered down by opinions and doctrines of men. The Word that is not corrupted by human reasoning.  Jesus said the Pharisees and scribes had made the Word of God of no effect by their tradition, (Mark 7:13).  We cannot grow unless we receive the pure, unadulterated Word of God.

Someone may be a Christian for years and years but if they are not receiving the pure Word of God there will be no spiritual growth in their life.  If they are feeding on other people’s opinions of the Word rather then receiving the Word themselves, their growth will be stunted.  On the other hand someone may be a Christian for a short time and if they are receiving the pure Word of God they will grow by leaps and bounds.

One Word from the Lord can sustain us for a long time.  One Word from God brings so much spiritual nourishment to our lives.  As we seek Him for His revelation of the Word we will grow spiritually and flourish into all that He wants us to be.
