What is our life?

May 05, 2000

What does it mean to give God our life?  What is our ‘life’ really?  The Bible says that a man’s life does not consist of the abundance of things which he possesses, (Luke 12:15).  So we know our life is not stuff.  Some parents will give their kids a lot of ‘stuff’ and think it’s enough.  They give them a roof, a bed and a meal and feel that’s all they need to do, but kids need a parent’s love and time.

Then there are people who’s whole ‘life’ is made up of trying to accomplish something.  They work hard to get a lot of stuff and to attain certain titles and positions of prestige.

In reality, our ‘life’ is made up of our time, our words, our energy, and our resources.  To give God our life means we give Him our time.   We’ll spend time with Him and spend time doing what He tells us to do.

We’ll speak words--His Words-- that will advance His kingdom and bring life to people rather then speaking words of darkness and death.

We’ll give God our energy-our ambition- and use our strength to accomplish His will for our lives instead of our own ambitions and desires.

But God is life, and if we give Him our life then we have His life in return.  Whatever we try to accomplish through our flesh is not really life at all, but death.  But allowing His life to live through us is the most rewarding and satisfying way to live.

We all crave life--true life--and we won’t really ever be satisfied without it.  So instead of spending all our time and energy trying to satisfy ourselves with other things, we’re better off putting that time and energy into pleasing God.  He’s what ‘life’ is all about.  Jesus said to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength, (Mark 12:30), I think that covers just about our whole ‘life’.
